Frequently asked questions

New to Mayor Cards, NFTs or digital collecting? Here are the answers to the questions we hear most often.

What is a Mayor Card?

A Mayor Card is a unique digital collectible representing a specific real-world place.

That place could be a city, town, village, neighbourhood or another location included in the Mayor Cards collection.

There is one unique Mayor Card representing each place in the collection.

What does it mean to become Mayor?

It means you own the Mayor Card representing that place.

β€œMayor” is the digital title used by the project for the collector who owns that place’s card.

It does not give you any official, political or legal authority over the real-world place.

Is a Mayor Card an NFT?

Yes. A Mayor Card is a unique digital asset recorded on a blockchain, which is why it is also referred to as an NFT.

The blockchain provides a public and verifiable record of the digital asset and its ownership history.

Where can I buy a Mayor Card?

Mayor Cards are bought and sold through OpenSea, a marketplace for digital collectibles and NFTs.

For the Netherlands, you can visit the Mayor Cards collection on OpenSea .

For Singapore, you can visit the Singapore Mayor Cards collection on OpenSea .

If you are completely new to NFTs, our How It Works page explains the process step by step.

Do I need to understand blockchain to collect?

No. You do not need to understand all the technical details of blockchain technology to appreciate or collect a Mayor Card.

Many collectors are interested in the places themselves rather than the underlying technology.

You do not need to understand blockchain to explore the collection, find a place you care about or own a Mayor Card.

Why would I collect a Mayor Card?

Because places can mean something.

Your hometown, the city you love, the village where you grew up, somewhere you travelled to, or simply a place you have always liked.

A Mayor Card lets you turn that connection into a digital collectible. You can also use the card as part of your online identity, for example on social media or another profile.

Can I collect more than one Mayor Card?

Absolutely.

You can collect as many different places as you like. Some collectors may want the place they live, places connected to their family, favourite travel destinations, or simply places they find interesting.

Which countries are currently available?

Mayor Cards is currently live in:

πŸ‡³πŸ‡± The Netherlands
πŸ‡ΈπŸ‡¬ Singapore

Together these collections include cities, towns, villages, districts and many smaller places that are often overlooked by traditional maps and collectibles

Is there really only one card for each place?

Yes. The concept is based on one unique Mayor Card representing each place in the collection.

That means the availability of a particular card can become part of the collecting experience.

Does owning a card mean I own the real place?

No.

A Mayor Card represents a place as a digital collectible. It does not give the holder legal ownership, property rights, control or authority over the real-world place.

Can the price of a Mayor Card change?

Yes. Prices on a marketplace such as OpenSea can change over time depending on supply, demand and what buyers and sellers are willing to accept.

A Mayor Card can become more or less valuable. There is no guarantee that its price will increase and there is no guarantee of profit or resale value.

Mayor Cards are intended to be collected because you like the place and the collectible β€” not because a financial return is guaranteed.

What happens if the Mayor Card for my place is already owned?

Because each place is represented by a single Mayor Card, some cards may already belong to another collector.

Depending on marketplace availability, a card may be listed for sale again in the future, but availability cannot be guaranteed.

Why was Mayor Cards created?

Mayor Cards was created from a simple observation: some places stay with us for life. A hometown, a village, a favourite city or a place connected to a meaningful memory can become part of who we are.

Mayor Cards started in 2021 and was created to turn those places into a collection people can discover, own and connect with digitally.

Were the cards made with generative AI?

The original Mayor Cards collection was created before today’s generative-AI boom and before mass-produced AI imagery became commonplace.

The cards were hand-drafted and hand-selected, with research into the places and categories represented in the collection.

Can Mayor Cards be used on social media?

Yes. A Mayor Card can be used as an image or part of your online identity, depending on the platform and its rules.

It can be a simple way to show a place that means something to you.

No. Mayor Cards is a digital collectible project and is not intended to represent an official municipality, government body or political office.

The names of real places are used to identify the places represented by the digital collectibles.
